Sightseeing 2023.12.05(Tue)
Hello.
This is Hotel Ten to Ten.
In this blog, we will guide you to Otaru, a recommended destination for a day trip from Sapporo.
Otaru, historically a thriving fishing town close to both settlements and the sea, saw development and prosperity when Sapporo was developed by the Meiji government. It was designated as a port connecting Hokkaido and Honshu. Otaru also holds the distinction of being the location where the first railway in Hokkaido was established.
When it comes to Otaru, the canal is a famous attraction. Along the canal, there are rows of brick warehouses, showcasing the lingering traces of a time when both fishing and maritime activities were thriving. The area around the canal has been revitalized, with warehouses transformed into cafes, souvenir shops, and stores specializing in glass crafts.
Exploring the area on foot or taking a cruise are highly recommended activities, allowing you to soak in the charming atmosphere and historical ambience of Otaru's canal district.
Otaru is renowned for its delicious seafood cuisine, thanks to its proximity to the fishing port, allowing visitors to savor fresh catches from the sea. The Sankaku Ichiba (Triangle Market) is conveniently located near Otaru Station and is a bustling spot popular among tourists.
When you visit Otaru, be sure to indulge in a seafood bowl (Kaisen-don). It's a must-try, allowing you to relish a delightful assortment of fresh and flavorful seafood.
If you're looking to enjoy food tasting and souvenir hunting, I recommend visiting Sakaimachi Street in Otaru. There are numerous well-known confectionery shops, some of which are famous even in Tokyo. It's an ideal place for finding souvenirs or enjoying a delightful afternoon snack.
Nearby, you'll find Suitengu Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of the sea. The view from there is excellent and highly recommended. Don't miss out on specialty shops featuring glass crafts and other unique items!
Otaru is approximately 1 hour by train or 45 minutes by car from Sapporo. It’s also highly recommended to rent a car and enjoy a scenic drive to Otaru.
If you choose to drive, especially during the winter, please exercise caution for potential slippery conditions. Nonetheless, the drive can offer picturesque views and a unique experience.
I encourage you to make the trip from Sapporo to Otaru and explore the charming attractions this city has to offer.
