Hi.

This is Hotel Ten to Ten.

As someone who has relocated from Tokyo to Hokkaido, I find that the charm of Hokkaido lies in its ever-changing seasons.

In the slightly delayed spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms and fresh greenery. During the summer, there’s a dry heat and a brief summer season perfect for various activities. In autumn, the vibrant foliage is captivating, and in winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland.

Speaking of places in Sapporo where you can savor these seasonal transitions, one must mention Hokkaido University, also known as Hokudai. The university campus resembles a park where locals of Sapporo enjoy leisurely walks, jogging, and cycling. Tourists, too, can relish the experience, indulging in soft-serve ice cream at the campus cafes.

Back when I lived in Tokyo, I never ventured into the campuses of other universities, and I have never stepped foot in the premises of the University of Tokyo. However, since coming to Sapporo, I often find myself casually strolling around Hokudai without any particular agenda in mind.

This is a monument to the renowned Dr. Clark's words: "Boys, Be ambitious !" Dr. Clark, who was invited as the inaugural principal of what would become Hokkaido University, or its predecessor, the Sapporo Agricultural College, in 1876. He is said to have imparted American agricultural, engineering, and livestock techniques. Although his stay was less than a year, he left behind this phrase upon his return, symbolizing his legacy.

During the summer, one can relish the lush and verdant new foliage. Within the Hokkaido University campus, there are areas designated for barbecues, allowing for observing the spirited activities of university students. Moreover, this pathway was also incorporated into the marathon course of the Tokyo Olympic games 2021.

Situated right in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido University encompasses a farm within its premises where sheep and cows are raised. Additionally, vegetables are cultivated for crop research purposes. The juxtaposition of sheep alongside high-rise buildings and tower apartments near Sapporo Station presents a uniquely intriguing sight. Moreover, one can indulge in treats like soft serve ice cream made from the milk of the locally nurtured cows.

With the arrival of snow, the landscape within Hokkaido University undergoes a significant transformation. The accumulation of snow creates a crisp and invigorating environment, perfect for leisurely strolls. Furthermore, the snow-covered hills formed after shoveling provide a playground for nearby kindergarteners to enjoy sledding. The enduring appeal of Sapporo lies in its ability to offer enjoyment even amidst snowy conditions.

Hokkaido University stands in close proximity to Hotel Ten to Ten, to the extent that during the examination season, prospective students even choose to lodge there. I encourage you to visit during the early hours of morning or the time preceding dinner.
